A simple ladder formed with bind off and cast ons is magically transformed by an intertwined stripe of garter stitch in this cowl.

Approximately 7” wide x 25” long

 

Materials

1 Hank Cuzco (100 grs), #9682 Boysenberry Mix

Straight knitting needles, size 10 (6.00 mm) OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Three 1 1/4” x 1 1/2” buttons from One World Button Supply Co.

 

Gauge

15 sts = 4”;  26 rows = 4” in Garter St

Cowl

With straight needles, cast on 30 sts.  Knit 9 rows.

Row 1 (WS):  K6, bind off 18 sts, k to end.

Row 2:  K6, cast on 21 sts, with knitted or cable cast on (see video) slip last cast on st to left hand needle and pass it over the next st on needle, see tips video, k6 – 32 sts.

Rows 3 and 5:  K6, p20, k6.

Rows 4 and 6:  Knit.

Row 7:  K6, bind off 20 sts, knit to end – 32 sts.

Rep Rows 2 – 7  twenty-three times more.

Next Row (WS):  K6, cast on 19 sts, , slip last cast on st to left hand needle and pass it over the next st on needle, see tips video,  k6 – 30 sts.  Knit 10 rows.  Bind off on WS in knit.

 

Finishing

Center Strap:  With RS facing, using straight needles, skip first 5 bound-off sts on Row 1 of cowl, pick up and k8 sts in the next 8 bound-off sts.  Work even in Garter St on these 8 sts until strap measures 28”, end on WS.  Bind off.  * Cross first horizontal Reverse St st band of cowl over second band.  Weave strap under second band and over first. (This twists the 2 bands and holds them in place). See tips video.  Rep from * until all bands have been twisted and strap is woven through all the way to the end of cowl.  Pull strap through so that the end is even with the end of cowl and pin in place.  Lap this end of cowl over the other end and sew on 3 buttons, sewing through all thicknesses of cowl.
